Digital Coffee Podcast

This podcast dedicated to all things tech. The story of how this came about was ordinary, maybe, but what I want to do with it, is extraordinary. I was working at a coffee shop and pondered my love for coffee and tech. I have also grown up around tech. I also had a new passion for coffee. This idea stayed with me until I figured out the name. Digital Coffee was born. So, with this idea I look at tech as I do coffee. How is the “tech brewed?” In my reviews, I look at it as a taste test, except I don’t drink the tech. I mean, who would? If you do, please let me know how I can! Anyways, if you feel like this is a great space to learn and have fun with tech, then, feel free to support me. I don’t mind at all! If you enjoy my podcast and blog please consider support me here: https://www.patreon.com/digitalcoffee Schedule: Monday: Digital Coffee Friday: Gamer’s Cafe Saturday: Marketing Blend Gaming on the Weekend! BF1 DLC is finally here for premium members and it is interesting. I am not sure about the new mode, but, the maps are pretty good. They have a good mix of open tank battles and confined spaces for infantry. I still have to play more of it to get a feel if this is a good DLC. Today's Episode

BF1 or Battlefield 1 got its winter update. It was a great update. I personally do not care about ribbons. I think they are useless and people will get plenty of these ribbons. I never cared for them in BF3 and BF4. It's a personal opinion. I do think DICE needs to look at some other things they missed, but, they are doing a good job balancing for the most part. We will see what happens when the new DLC comes out.

Also, Verizon brings unlimited data back. This is in response to what T-Mobile doing well. They finally have a response to losing customers to its competitor. I do not think it will be the same as before, but, it is a nice change. People loved unlimited data and that will always be a fact.

Today's Episode

Google ads, they are effective. Even Google has figured out the right formula for their own products. However, Google ads to affect ads. This is going to be an increasing problem the more Google pushes into products. Companies should try to beat their ads. It's not right given that Google knows their system very well, but, that is the world we live in.

The funny part is seeing Facebook activity going down. This may be what most people were feeling. It has been felt for a while that people do not use Facebook as much as they use to. This is why Facebook has moved into developing countries. They know people use other sites or have canceled their accounts.

Show Timeline:

Today's Episode

Activision lays off some staff from its developers. This is because of Call of Duty and missing Q4 projections. It's sad and unfortunate to hear people losing their jobs. However, Call of Duty is in a rut. It has had some upgrades to the game, but, releasing games every year makes it boring. We shall see if Call of Duty in 2017 will be different and better. I do hope it does. Even though I do not prefer playing the game, I still like seeing competition from these developers.

I've been playing For Honor open beta a little. It's interesting. This could be a surprise hit for Ubisoft if they can keep it competitive and have an equal distribution between the factions. That was the problem with Planetside 2. In the beginning, one faction dominated. We shall see.

Show Timeline:

  • Valve is changing Greenlight
  • Stark Trek: Bridge Commander coming in May
  • Valve is working on some VR games
  • Conan Exile sells over 300,000 games and mod tools coming

If For Honor can keep a balanced ratio in the factions,  it might be a hit.

It's good that Mass Effect will have better sidequests.

Netflix blunder is nothing new now. This is the same thing every business is doing. Hate a specific group because it is socially acceptable. The best argument is that if you did this to any other group, that would be horrible. However, why is it acceptable to do it to white people? Netflix should be prepared for some loss in subscribers and a hit in their revenue. People will vote with their wallets. Be prepared.

Twitter looks to be marching towards censorship. This is looking more like a full control on what people can say on their network. Funny thing, when they were new, they wanted public discourse. Now, they would rather tell you it's not good.

Today's Episode

The Super Bowl. It's a time for people to get together and enjoy two teams fighting for a title. One of the reasons why the Super Bowl got so popular is because of the commercials. Businesses decided to make their commercials spectacles that were funny. Football brought people together. It did not matter what political affiliation you were, it was time to watch a great game... hopefully. Now, that seems like an impossible task. This year some businesses decided to go political.

However, it was not all of them. Some still showed their funny side, but, others missed the ball. In this tense time in America, businesses need to understand that it is getting worse. You can stand for something, but, be prepared to suffer some consequences for that. Audi is the best example. They decided to make a commercial about gender issues and forget they were selling cars.

This episode is all about the commercials and other things that happened at the Super Bowl. Mostly, it has to with the messaging and making sure you do not do something that will set a group off or a smaller group. Find out more down below

Show Timeline:

  • Talking about the Super Bowl
  • Rating the Ads
  • Once again, telling why it's important to stay neutral
  • How companies will pay for their political statements
  • How bad some companies were not understanding the event or their audience
  • Why Lady Gaga made a better choice
  • What I want to see businesses doing in the future

Today's Episode

Oh, tech media, what the hell is your problem. Yes, you should not bow to all of your reader's whims, but, berating them is not good for your business. If your readers are telling you to report on tech more than politics, that may be something to look at. If this same group grows larger and larger, then, it's time to listen. Writing an article about how they should shut up, means you should be doing the same thing. It's time to stop pretending you have the moral authority to tell your readers they are wrong. Stop.

This leads me to the tech companies. Stop. Your arguments are terrible about the executive order on immigration. First, it's not a ban. Stop calling it that. Second, no, your business was started by a White American. Last, we are not a nation of immigrants and stop using that argument. We were, but how long does it take to not be an immigrant?

Show Timeline:

  • Facebook is working on a streaming app
  • Comcast is doing what Comcast does
  • Microsoft is building a Windows cloud system
  • GoPro is making the Karma Drone again

Today's Episode

Starbucks virtue marketing. It's similar to virtue signaling. Too close from what I've seen. This is a way for a company to capitalize on a political controversy for monetary gain. They have done it before and will do it again. The problem with this is the company equates that every customer is a monolith. That is not true. No one agrees with you 100 percent. I do not care how close you are with your friend, there will be disagreements. Starbucks is painting itself into a corner, if they are not careful, their sales could drop.

The reason is my generation. My generation is the best virtue signaling group I have ever seen. It needs to stop. You are not making a change and you are forcing businesses into stupid decisions. Culture is a pendulum. One moment, one idea is popular, then years later, it switches. This is usually because of the next generation coming of age. I hope Starbucks weighs its risks, because this is a bitter fight in American culture, be sure you know what this means.

Show Timeline:

  • Study finds Amazon is the most trusted SMB
  • Twitter NFL stream is huge
  • Branch unveils AMP Deepview

Today's Episode

Resident Evil 7, what can you say about it? It was very different from Resident Evil 6. I played and finished the game this week. It scared the hell out of me. I was very gruesome too. If you cannot stand lots of gore, this is not the game for you. It is great to see the survivor horror back in Resident Evil. I talk about why I rather play games than watch movies. Today's Episode

Facebook is doing it again! They are copying Snapchat, but, really, just taking Instagram stories and putting it on Facebook. So, they are copying, the copy. They are putting new ads in Messenger and doing away with a personalized trending topic. It's an interesting move for Facebook. I really do not know what to think about this. Then we have Ellen K. Pao. If you do not know her, she is the former CEO of Reddit. She's back on the censorship train. She is calling on Jack to ban the President from Twitter. The funny part is she disabled comments on her Medium post. Find out what I have to say about this and more!

Today's Episode

It happened, LinkedIn update is a great step forward in 2017. They unveiled their new web design and it looks great. They were talking about it for months and now they are rolling it out. I will add that I do not have it yet. It's a really slow rollout. If you have not gotten it yet, just sit tight. The update emphasizes content. This is just the push to be more modern on their website. It needed to happen. It's the best gift for social media in 2017!

I also talk about the need for businesses to stay neutral. It is the best policy. Unless you can guarantee there is no backlash and you are on the side that wins, it's a bad idea. If you want to know, Target paid the price for this. The bathroom policy good or bad had a consequence. Their sales went down 20 percent. It was a bad business move.  Find out why down below.

Show Timeline:

  • Youtube gets access to Google ad targeting
  • People are not happy with Twitter
  • LinkedIn gets a web redesign

DICE had some teases for gamers with the BF1 DLC. It was a quick preview of a new tank and maybe a new elite class. Probably weapons based on the French army and that's all everyone knows outside of EA and DICE. Halo Wars 2 beta finally reached the PC today. There is only one mode and it's interesting. This week we say goodbye to Vine as a social network. It will only live as a camera app now. It's not surprising given that Twitter did not put enough resources into it after the initial buy. Today's Episode

Facebook announced new live features for brands. Now you can live stream through your brand page on the web. This means brands can do better live video with better equipment. My brand page does not have it yet, but, social media companies do slow rollouts. The good thing for users is there is a potential for better content. That's what digital marketers are all about! Also, be aware that more live streaming is going to happen. This could make it oversaturated in a matter of years. That means making a plan and calculating what is going to be the best content for your fans.

We now turn to the demise of App.net. I know many of you may not have heard about this, but, it was supposed to be the alternative to Twitter. It was an interesting platform, but, it was too similar. The problem now is new companies copying another platform. Never do that. Be your own platform. Find out more down below.

Twitter is on a roll. Not a good one, though. They announced Twitter dashboard will shut down. Yes, the dashboard app seemed interesting. Allowing brands and businesses to monitor, tweet and schedule all in one app. 2017 is not starting off on the right foot for Twitter. It was a business decision, but, maybe Twitter should focus on Twitter. No more other apps, just Twitter. Let's hope Twitter finds its way.

However, Facebook is finding a way to repair its relationship with publishers and reports. They have launched a new project dedicated to journalism. This gives them tools and a better way to live stream. It should be interesting to see if this pays off.

Today's Episode

Vine is shutting down soon. This is not a surprise to anyone. The social platform was not supported by Twitter and it focused on live streaming. The audience dwindled and it is shutting down. It will live on as a camera, but, take a backseat to Periscope. It's a shame to how this all went down, but, six-second videos did not need a standalone platform. This is the best alternative. It is a reminder that everything can die and build your audience on different platforms is a wise decision. There are other platforms to do short video. There is no shortage of that. Facebook did a short update to brand pages. It's an interesting way to get business to post different content. I wonder if it will be any good. Only time will tell.

Show's Timeline:

  • Taboola changes from widget to platform
  • AOL unveils brandbuilder for your brand's ads.
  • Amazon made more money than any other e-commerce site
  • Alexa a marketer?

Today's Episode

It's January and that means CES is back! CES 2017 seems to be about the smart fridges and convincing people about making their homes smart. It's bigger this year. LG and Samsung are trying to persuade people into an always-connected life. Will people buy into it, is the question. There are some grave security questions about always connected devices. None of the companies seem too concerned about it either. This security concern does warrant me to hold off until they address this issue. No one should have their TV or fridge hijacked and told to pay money for it. However, I am hopefully these companies will wise up and invest time and money into it. This is the best way to get more customers and ensure they stay loyal.

Today's Episode

Well, look at that, 2016 is almost done. Isn't it glorious? Yes! This episode is going to be looking ahead to the tech future! Plus, some tech news. I will look back at what happened in 2016 and what I want to see in 2017. There are just some things that need to die... Flash! Please finally go away! Plus, these dubious bullying rules and "fake news." I'm looking at you Facebook and Twitter. I want these social networks to stop policing and get rid of tailoring feeds. Tailored feeds are what got us into this hyper drama culture we face. I always think fake news is subjective to the person. We want to believe in what most people deem true. Now, that doesn't mean I don't think there aren't some universal truths. I'm tired of one side calling the other side's reporting fake. That's not a debate and we need to be open to the opposing opinion. However, I do concede there are some sites that do misleading headlines and poor research skills, but, that is a minority. Let's hope some of this gets resolved in 2017!

Show Timeline:

  • South Korea fines Qualcomm
  • Sylvania smart bulb connects to Apple Homekit
  •  Amazon sells more Echo's this holiday season

Happy Holidays everyone! It's a great time of year. However, timed exclusives are the worst! They the scrooge of the gaming industry. I think it's dumb and publishers need to stop doing them. Just launch everything at the same time. I do not like this update is only going to be on platform A for X number of days. It does seem publishers are saying to not buy it on the platform you prefer. I say, "no more!" Anyways, I do like the festive updates that are coming to Hitman, Overwatch and others. Keep it coming!

Fitbit bought the tech and engineers but did not care about anything else. This means Pebble is refunding all the Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Core. The web is an everything changing environment. We are in 2.0 and now web 3.0 is upon us. It seems to be more about voice search and AMP. This could change, but, we are in an interesting. Yes, everything changes quickly; sometimes more so than we want. I go through why you need to know this and at least look into it. Also, Pinterest launched a new feature called showcase. The Game Awards was on Thursday. I did not see it because I was busy. I do think most people do not watch this because of many reasons. They seem to be like all the other awards shows out there. This is getting tiring. Reddit is becoming the place to never have a thought or a wrong thought. The CEO of Reddit did something wrong. He should be punished for his dubious actions. If he really wants to heal Reddit and the country; maybe you should not silence a group. The problem with these people is they do not understand hate speech. They do not understand free speech and they were riding on the goodwill of their users for so long, they forgot about the trust that was built for the past decade. People should be suspicious of these companies. They do not care about you or your speech.

Businesses care about their brand voice. It is the only thing customers know about the brand... usually. This is the way the company conveys its message to the world.  Businesses spend hours on getting it right. However, have we gotten it all wrong? This election shows always being sorry for any perceived outrage may not be the best strategy. Maybe, just maybe, we marketers need to branch out and have a slight offending voice. We all know we cannot please everyone. Businesses do try, but, fail at it all the time. Pleasing everyone is never a great strategy. Losing customers is not either, but, you will lose some customers. I have never seen any business keep all their customers. The reason is, not all of their followers are loyal customers. They may be a one time purchase. It's important to know that and work to make a brand voice that speaks to your loyal customers.

Oh, the Twitter bans strike again! This time they ban their own CEO. I find this poetic justice for all the random bans they've been throwing out lately. People with the wrong idea get banned. Twitter, remember you became popular because of the idea of free speech. People flocked to these sites to share their ideas. Now, not all ideas are good, but, that's not the point. Twitter, it's fine if you ban people for acts of violence of the threat of violence. However, banning people because they are not part of the left is ridiculous. It's time to stop the madness and let people think for themselves. I do not care if you are right or left, I want the ability to share without worrying about being banned. That's ridiculous.

Anyways, scroll down to find out more!

Ubisoft can we talk? Ubisoft hates stories? Apparently, they do not want to write narratives anymore. I cannot remember the last game I played where the story was good. Ubisoft hates stories. They do not want to create interesting characters. The problem with gaming stories is they all seem to follow a pattern. Yes, I know there are only some many ways to write a story. However, the gaming industry is not willing to risk that much. The problem is the best stories can come from those risks. I hope they find a way to do both.

Twitter hates ideas. This is a problem to me. I think the best of Twitter was they allowed people to express their ideas. It didn't matter if you were right, left, center, or didn't care. The problem is Twitter wants groupthink. It thinks that one political ideology is right. I think that if a business uses a free speech in their policies, they do thrive. However, private businesses do not have to follow a free speech model. Twitter needs to follow its own policy and only ban those that do terrible things. Disagreeing is not one.

Oh, GrubHub. This is not your week. The CEO needs better training from his PR team. This will be one of the worst blunders the company has done. I know you may not like political ideologies, but, having people not agree with you is a good thing.  He should have seen this as a strength and not made it look like his employees that voted for Trump should quit. This should be a lesson for everyone. There is some backlash from his email. No one is immune to this. Anyways, Periscope is making some interesting moves. I like where they are going. Yes, I finally played enough of Battlefield 1. In this episode, I give my Battlefield 1 review. If you want a first-person shooter that is not set in the modern or future setting this could be a game for you. Yes, I'm still playing this and Titanfall 2 and Civilization 6. I will have those reviews later. Also, BlizzCon has begun. Yes, this year we have a new character for Overwatch. This could be a great addition or break the game. Adobe announced the new update for their Creative Cloud. Some of it was cool, but the best updates, Project Felix. This new program will help use 2D/3D pictures to create something photo realistic. This is great news for graphic designers. Yes, fewer hours of making it perfect. There more updates that I discuss in the episode. Microsoft is taking on Slack. Their new program Microsoft Teams is all about teams.  Everyone in the business world does have to work for a team(s). Unless, you host your own podcast. Microsoft saw Slack taking people away from Skype. It was the go-to business communication tool. It's great that there is more competition.

I do not see people using this unless they are team Microsoft. If you are not using Office, it is not the program for you. If this is a great product, Microsoft will have people not hating them too much. Let's be honest, they deserved most of the ire.

It's a good strategy to be on more than one social network. However, not being on every social network. The biggest reason for this is any of these sites can shut down. They can  pivot and do something different. There is no guarantee that the platform will not change or be there for a long time. It is unknowable. However, the site you can control is your own website. This is your best asset and something you need. Your website is the place you call home. Treat your home well.

The DDoS attack is a wake-up call. This happens quite a bit in the gaming industry. DDoS seems to happen monthly. However, seeing this happen on a bigger scale is scary. The other problem is terrible security for wearable technology. These companies are sacrificing security for speed and ease. People want things to be fast. However, speed sometimes is not the best outcome. We need a better option. I do think that AI could help with that. I know this is a touchy subject. Movies have shown the darker side of AI. However, I think it could help with the problem. The problem is the sophistication of the DDoS. It's going to get worse, but, I believe we can find a better way.

Oh, politics. You rear your ugly head. The tech industry and the tech media have been terrible about being balanced. They always go to for the extreme left. Ad blockers, the necessary evil of online browsing. Most people use it to do anything on the web. Ads have become a problem. They are disruptive to the flow of posts. There are full-page ads that disconnect the consumer from the content. Publishers and marketers created this mess. This is a big problem. My professional pushed people to use ad blockers. Now, Facebook has to do something drastic. They need to make sure people are seeing ads. This is where the majority of their revenue comes from. More ad blockers used, then no money generated. I may not like Facebook, but, I understand why they are doing it. I also talk about the state of social media marketing. It's similar to tech. Tech, it's an interesting topic to discuss. There's always something great and terrible happening. It's in a constant state of change. It is the best analogy of life. We are all in a constant state change. Life demands us to change or die. Tech is at a major crossroad for change. If you know anything about it, this does not happen that often. We've seen some great innovations and some small ones. We have VR and AR coming of age. We have cars that will drive themselves. AI development is leading to some interesting experiments. I will predict that AI will be deployed to be our cyber security. They will be way more efficient than how we do it today.

Now, businesses are going to need to care about security. We've seen too many examples of hacks that lead to lawsuits. There have to be better protocols for stopping most of these hacks. This should not be happening once a month. This needs to stop. Companies need to find a better way. Please, back up your data.

I've said it before, marketers and advertisers do not make great ads. They are usually ok, but, mostly bad. The new reports show that publishers and marketers care about the impressions than trust. If we do not find a way to make them better, there go the profits. However, Facebook is doing well in that aspect. They also love to stuff anything with ads. They are ad happy. That's a problem. It's why people use ad-blockers. The problem is, it's only going to get worse. We need to find a better way. I hope we can strike a balance between revenue and trust. Trust is hard to get back.

Nintendo is doing things right. First, it's popular Pokemon Go and now, Nintendo Mini. Yes, I want to play some classic games. This is great news. Even though we have to wait until November, this Christmas season is going to be awesome! Overwatch announced several changes. Two seems to be pretty good moves. Zenyatta needed a buff. He was easy to kill and this will help make him effective. D. VA is getting a buff too. This should help make her more of a tank. Before, it was easy to deal with her. The best news comes from the competitive scene. Blizzard is not letting teams pick all of a certain character. Only in competitive mode. So quick play those 76s, all day!

Anyways, on with the show!

Yes! Nintendo is bringing back the classics!

To say I am excited for No Man's Sky is an understatement. I want to boldly go!

Today's Episode

Once, again I am talking about Pokemon Go. Marketers are wanting in on the action. They see a goldmine in the popular game. Even though I am skeptical about how popular it will remain, there's big business in it. This idea is not new. Ingress was the predecessor of Pokemon Go. Pokemon is actually an updated version of Ingress. The reason marketers want in is the amount of people playing it right now. There are millions of people playing. It's more popular than Tinder, Twitter, and has better engagement than Facebook. That's huge!

However, I do caution that early result can wane. We've seen it before. Vine is struggling with that right now. Even though it is an interesting platform. There is not a lot of interest in it anymore. I hope Vine can right the ship, but, I think it may fold into Twitter.

Anyways, on with the show!

  • Facebook is testing out new Business Profiles
  • There's trouble on the Vine
  • Facebook does a study on gamers, that does not define gamers...

  • FTC warns Warner Brothers about their practices with influencers.
  • Mozilla is going to crowd source content
  • Simply Measured brings a handy tool to marketers
  • Twitter is giving more data to brands
  • Podwave helps brands advertise on Podcasts
  • Why you should not forget about Twitter
  • and more!

Question:

Do you use Twitter well?

Tweetable Quotes:

I think the research is interesting, I wish they would tell me who they define gamers.

Facebook Desktop ads do not matter to Facebook.

Twitter needs to figure itself out. Vine needs to do it quickly.

If brands/retailers can decide where to place Pokemon this could be great. Like placing them on a sale item or a hot item.

Social media these days, its always seems like we are being duped as businesses. Even the future of social media can be murky at times. Facebook is the worst offender. Facebook was great for businesses in the beginning, but, since they are so big do not care. Make no mistake, they are there to make money. The best way is to limit the exposure of a business, then implement an advertising scheme. Facebook has once again proved that every business needs to diversify. Never put all your resources into these companies because their strategy and business plan will change.

Again, the government fails. It has made Android weak and compromised the encryption all for law enforcement. It's just another example of the government failing to recognize its shortcomings. We also have a potential president not being prosecuted for carelessness. I do not care how high up you are, if you mess with national security, then you should be fined. Instead, she is just told how careless she was. We all knew that. We want justice. I, like many others, have lost all faith in the government. I do not think they know how to govern. Maybe we should give them a dummies guide to governing. At least the FTC is doing something useful. They are investigating Ashley Madison. I do think that site should be investigated. Not for what they do, but, for the practice. Pretending to have women on that site is deceptive.

It's not a good way to do business. You should never trick people to buy your product. Anyways, let's start the show!

Tech News Discussed:

  • The adults are using Snapchat. Time to move on teens
  • There's a leaked photo of the iPhone 7.
  • Blackberry is saying goodbye to its classic phone.
  • Death by selfie.
  • FBI clears Hillary of charges but we all know she is stupid when it comes to tech.
  • Twitter adds a Facebooker to its company
  • China loves its censorship
  • FTC investigating Ashley Madison.
  • and more!

Question:

Are you on Snapchat?

Tweetable Quotes:

Oh no! The adults are coming to Snapchat! Run for the hills!

She did something wrong and she should be accountable for it.

I want my tombstone to say, "The government does not understand tech."
