Digital Coffee Podcast

This podcast dedicated to all things tech. The story of how this came about was ordinary, maybe, but what I want to do with it, is extraordinary. I was working at a coffee shop and pondered my love for coffee and tech. I have also grown up around tech. I also had a new passion for coffee. This idea stayed with me until I figured out the name. Digital Coffee was born. So, with this idea I look at tech as I do coffee. How is the “tech brewed?” In my reviews, I look at it as a taste test, except I don’t drink the tech. I mean, who would? If you do, please let me know how I can! Anyways, if you feel like this is a great space to learn and have fun with tech, then, feel free to support me. I don’t mind at all! Today's Episode

Oh, 2016. You had some memorable games this year. This episode I talk about my best of 2016 gaming list. I have my list and I did check it twice. This was the best game to come out of 2016. It was a good year for strategy and first-person shooters. I will miss 2016 because we got some great titles and the rise of VR. 2017 should tell us if VR is here to stay or a bust. Here's to more exciting games in 2017. I think 2017 is the year of the RPG.

Show Timeline:

  • Hero Song shuts down and developer out of business
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda to showcase at CES 2017
  • Developers remember Carrie Fisher
  • Former Crysis studio goes independent
  • A modder is recreating X-Wing in the Unity Engine.
  • Hitman's new elusive target is a food critic
  • PNY gets a faster SSD
  • Postal goes open source
  • Star Citizen kinda has a new engine
  • Windows is getting a "gaming mode"
  • Day of Infamy is in beta now
  • Valve gets hit by 2.4 million fine
  • My Best of 2016 Gaming List

Gaming Deals:

Highlights from the Show:

Hitman lets you get your frustration out of food critics!

It's funny how people got mad at Star Citizen for changing engines, when, they really didn't.

I hope this modder does finish his X-Wing project.

Today's Episode

Well, look at that, 2016 is almost done. Isn't it glorious? Yes! This episode is going to be looking ahead to the tech future! Plus, some tech news. I will look back at what happened in 2016 and what I want to see in 2017. There are just some things that need to die... Flash! Please finally go away! Plus, these dubious bullying rules and "fake news." I'm looking at you Facebook and Twitter. I want these social networks to stop policing and get rid of tailoring feeds. Tailored feeds are what got us into this hyper drama culture we face. I always think fake news is subjective to the person. We want to believe in what most people deem true. Now, that doesn't mean I don't think there aren't some universal truths. I'm tired of one side calling the other side's reporting fake. That's not a debate and we need to be open to the opposing opinion. However, I do concede there are some sites that do misleading headlines and poor research skills, but, that is a minority. Let's hope some of this gets resolved in 2017!

Show Timeline:

  • South Korea fines Qualcomm
  • Sylvania smart bulb connects to Apple Homekit
  •  Amazon sells more Echo's this holiday season
  • Twitter releases new 360 live video
  • Firefox to stop support for Windows XP and Vista in 2017
  • A cool new mechanical SNES keyboard.
  • Looking back on the year
  • What tech future can I find in 2017

Apps/Programs to Try this Week:

Highlights of the Show:

This SNES mechanical keyboard is bringing back all the fond memories!

I think 2017 is AMD's year.

I really want us all to stop finding drama everywhere in 2017.

Today's Episode

Happy Holidays everyone! It's a great time of year. However, timed exclusives are the worst! They the scrooge of the gaming industry. I think it's dumb and publishers need to stop doing them. Just launch everything at the same time. I do not like this update is only going to be on platform A for X number of days. It does seem publishers are saying to not buy it on the platform you prefer. I say, "no more!" Anyways, I do like the festive updates that are coming to Hitman, Overwatch and others. Keep it coming!

The rumors were swirling for weeks about Pebble being acquired. Well, their tech was acquired. That means there no more Pebbles. Fitbit bought the tech and engineers but did not care about anything else. This means Pebble is refunding all the Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Core. It's sad to see a small company with a pretty good product go under. It's even worse to see another company not care brand or old products. Fitbit is going to make some enemies. The web is an everything changing environment. We are in 2.0 and now web 3.0 is upon us. It seems to be more about voice search and AMP. This could change, but, we are in an interesting. Yes, everything changes quickly; sometimes more so than we want. I go through why you need to know this and at least look into it. Also, Pinterest launched a new feature called showcase. This allows brands to showcase boards that may not be performing well and products your selling on Pinterest. I like this new feature. I think this could help brands show off their best content. This could bring more engagement to brands if they do it right. If you have not seen it yet, then you don't have a business page. You should probably get on that.

The Game Awards was on Thursday. I did not see it because I was busy. I do think most people do not watch this because of many reasons. They seem to be like all the other awards shows out there. I rarely watch any of them. Why? I really don't care about the awards. It's nice when a game you like get recognition, but, gamer's play games. We care about reviews. That's really about it. Award shows are for the industry. They may have been for the gamers at one time, but, gaming is mainstream now. Oh well, game on!

This is getting tiring. Reddit is becoming the place to never have a thought or a wrong thought. The CEO of Reddit did something wrong. He should be punished for his dubious actions. If he really wants to heal Reddit and the country; maybe you should not silence a group. The problem with these people is they do not understand hate speech. They do not understand free speech and they were riding on the goodwill of their users for so long, they forgot about the trust that was built for the past decade. People should be suspicious of these companies. They do not care about you or your speech.

Find out why below.

Businesses care about their brand voice. It is the only thing customers know about the brand... usually. This is the way the company conveys its message to the world.  Businesses spend hours on getting it right. However, have we gotten it all wrong? This election shows always being sorry for any perceived outrage may not be the best strategy. Maybe, just maybe, we marketers need to branch out and have a slight offending voice. We all know we cannot please everyone. Businesses do try, but, fail at it all the time. Pleasing everyone is never a great strategy. Losing customers is not either, but, you will lose some customers. I have never seen any business keep all their customers. The reason is, not all of their followers are loyal customers. They may be a one time purchase. It's important to know that and work to make a brand voice that speaks to your loyal customers.

Oh, the Twitter bans strike again! This time they ban their own CEO. I find this poetic justice for all the random bans they've been throwing out lately. People with the wrong idea get banned. Twitter, remember you became popular because of the idea of free speech. People flocked to these sites to share their ideas. Now, not all ideas are good, but, that's not the point. Twitter, it's fine if you ban people for acts of violence of the threat of violence. However, banning people because they are not part of the left is ridiculous. It's time to stop the madness and let people think for themselves. I do not care if you are right or left, I want the ability to share without worrying about being banned. That's ridiculous.

Anyways, scroll down to find out more!

Ubisoft can we talk? Ubisoft hates stories? Apparently, they do not want to write narratives anymore. I cannot remember the last game I played where the story was good. Ubisoft hates stories. They do not want to create interesting characters. The problem with gaming stories is they all seem to follow a pattern. Yes, I know there are only some many ways to write a story. However, the gaming industry is not willing to risk that much. The problem is the best stories can come from those risks. I hope they find a way to do both.

Twitter hates ideas. This is a problem to me. I think the best of Twitter was they allowed people to express their ideas. It didn't matter if you were right, left, center, or didn't care. The problem is Twitter wants groupthink. It thinks that one political ideology is right. I think that if a business uses a free speech in their policies, they do thrive. However, private businesses do not have to follow a free speech model. Twitter needs to follow its own policy and only ban those that do terrible things. Disagreeing is not one.

Oh, GrubHub. This is not your week. The CEO needs better training from his PR team. This will be one of the worst blunders the company has done. I know you may not like political ideologies, but, having people not agree with you is a good thing.  He should have seen this as a strength and not made it look like his employees that voted for Trump should quit. This should be a lesson for everyone. There is some backlash from his email. No one is immune to this. Anyways, Periscope is making some interesting moves. I like where they are going. The review happened. I finally played enough of Titanfall 2 to give my review. It was an interesting game. I liked it but, you have to listen to the show to find out the rest. The interesting part I found this week was Pharah being able to fly throughout the match. They are testing it out on PTR. That could impact the game in good and bad ways. Luckily there are other heroes that could handle this. I'm fine with Blizzard testing things out in the PTR.  Lastly, that Red Alert 2 VR game looks awesome!

Social media and ads are part of the game. Facebook and LinkedIn are open the floodgates on their messaging services. If you are tired of ads, well, you have to accept them more. Good or bad this is the new normal. We at the point of social media where they are established and looking for more revenue. It part of the business and we are just along for the ride. Plus, the election happened. People are leaving for one person. The past 8 years people were fine and now, they freaking out. Today's Episode

Yes, I finally played enough of Battlefield 1. In this episode, I give my Battlefield 1 review. If you want a first-person shooter that is not set in the modern or future setting this could be a game for you. Yes, I'm still playing this and Titanfall 2 and Civilization 6. I will have those reviews later. Also, BlizzCon has begun. Yes, this year we have a new character for Overwatch. This could be a great addition or break the game. I know Blizzard does a pretty good job of balance, but, I know infiltrator classes can break games. I've seen it happen. We will see if this is a good addition or a game breaking addition. Either way, it's going to be interesting.

Plus, Polygon is crap. I really want to put that on. Scroll down to find out why!

Today's Episode

Adobe announced the new update for their Creative Cloud. Some of it was cool, but the best updates, Project Felix. This new program will help use 2D/3D pictures to create something photo realistic. This is great news for graphic designers. Yes, fewer hours of making it perfect. There more updates that I discuss in the episode. Microsoft is taking on Slack. Their new program Microsoft Teams is all about teams.  Everyone in the business world does have to work for a team(s). Unless, you host your own podcast. Microsoft saw Slack taking people away from Skype. It was the go-to business communication tool. It's great that there is more competition.

I do not see people using this unless they are team Microsoft. If you are not using Office, it is not the program for you. If this is a great product, Microsoft will have people not hating them too much. Let's be honest, they deserved most of the ire.

Social media plans are important for any business, brand, or personality.  It's good to have a goal or plan for your business. Social media companies are fickle and they change all the time. It's a good strategy to be on more than one social network. However, not being on every social network. The biggest reason for this is any of these sites can shut down. They can  pivot and do something different. There is no guarantee that the platform will not change or be there for a long time. It is unknowable. However, the site you can control is your own website. This is your best asset and something you need. Your website is the place you call home. Treat your home well.

The numbers for Titanfall 2 appear to not be good. The analysts are saying that it will not sell well. Titanfall 2 will sell. They are not denying that they are concerned about why they released so close to Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty. This could impact the next game. I mean, there might not be one. The DDoS attack is a wake-up call. This happens quite a bit in the gaming industry. DDoS seems to happen monthly. However, seeing this happen on a bigger scale is scary. Oh, politics. You rear your ugly head. The tech industry and the tech media have been terrible about being balanced. They always go to for the extreme left. Today's Episode

Twitter has finally released its "longer tweets." That's right, the media in your tweets will not account against your character count. This is a long time coming. They should have released this years ago. However, at least we get it now. Better late than never! There are some rules to it, but, for the most part, media does not count against it. I am amazed at how long it took them to figure this out. Everyone that uses Twitter always hated that feature. It makes Twitter a little more useful. No longer the anger fist of losing some characters to media. Let's rejoice and tweet some more!

Now, scroll down to hear the show!

Gamers are an interesting breed. We crave excitement and a challenge, but, not all the time. It gets worse as time goes on. The older we get, the more we do not want to compete. Games are fun and sometimes you just want to have fun. Not compete, not have to deal with people. That's why single player is still a viable avenue for developers to do. It's a big surprise that the older you get, the less you want to compete. People change, you have more responsibilities and competing is not fun. It's great that single player games are still around. Ad blockers, the necessary evil of online browsing. Most people use it to do anything on the web. Ads have become a problem. They are disruptive to the flow of posts. There are full-page ads that disconnect the consumer from the content. Publishers and marketers created this mess. This is a big problem. My professional pushed people to use ad blockers. Now, Facebook has to do something drastic. They need to make sure people are seeing ads. This is where the majority of their revenue comes from. More ad blockers used, then no money generated. I may not like Facebook, but, I understand why they are doing it. I also talk about the state of social media marketing. It's similar to tech. Tech, it's an interesting topic to discuss. There's always something great and terrible happening. It's in a constant state of change. It is the best analogy of life. We are all in a constant state change. Life demands us to change or die. Tech is at a major crossroad for change. If you know anything about it, this does not happen that often. We've seen some great innovations and some small ones. We have VR and AR coming of age. We have cars that will drive themselves. AI development is leading to some interesting experiments. I will predict that AI will be deployed to be our cyber security. They will be way more efficient than how we do it today.

Now, businesses are going to need to care about security. We've seen too many examples of hacks that lead to lawsuits. There have to be better protocols for stopping most of these hacks. This should not be happening once a month. This needs to stop. Companies need to find a better way. Please, back up your data.

I've said it before, marketers and advertisers do not make great ads. They are usually ok, but, mostly bad. The new reports show that publishers and marketers care about the impressions than trust. If we do not find a way to make them better, there go the profits. However, Facebook is doing well in that aspect. They also love to stuff anything with ads. They are ad happy. That's a problem. It's why people use ad-blockers. The problem is, it's only going to get worse. We need to find a better way. I hope we can strike a balance between revenue and trust. Trust is hard to get back.

Gather around techies! Let me tell you a story about Instagram. They made a Snapchat clone. The very least copied a feature. It's called Instagram Stories. This is not big news because every other social network had a feature. It's great to see LinkedIn finally jumping into it. I feel like LinkedIn is behind with lots of features. Valve is in a terrible situation. CS:GO is a great game and has made Valve lots of money. However, this betting scandal is not good. It has hurt Valve's reputation and gained them a lawsuit. The problem is Youtuber's. The fact that they gamed the system and conned people out of their money is terrible. I do hope some legal action gets taken against them. However, No Man's Sky is in the news. This time, it's bad. Sean Murray took a patent and used it in the game. I'm glad the company does not want to halt the release of the game. The problem is, patents are so hard to track, you may never know you are infringing on one.

Great news! Nvidia 1060 is out!

Nintendo is doing things right. First, it's popular Pokemon Go and now, Nintendo Mini. Yes, I want to play some classic games. This is great news. Even though we have to wait until November, this Christmas season is going to be awesome! Overwatch announced several changes. Two seems to be pretty good moves. Zenyatta needed a buff. He was easy to kill and this will help make him effective. D. VA is getting a buff too. This should help make her more of a tank. Before, it was easy to deal with her. The best news comes from the competitive scene. Blizzard is not letting teams pick all of a certain character. Only in competitive mode. So quick play those 76s, all day!

Today's Episode

Once, again I am talking about Pokemon Go. Marketers are wanting in on the action. They see a goldmine in the popular game. Even though I am skeptical about how popular it will remain, there's big business in it. This idea is not new. Ingress was the predecessor of Pokemon Go. Pokemon is actually an updated version of Ingress. The reason marketers want in is the amount of people playing it right now. There are millions of people playing. It's more popular than Tinder, Twitter, and has better engagement than Facebook. That's huge!

However, I do caution that early result can wane. We've seen it before. Vine is struggling with that right now. Even though it is an interesting platform. There is not a lot of interest in it anymore. I hope Vine can right the ship, but, I think it may fold into Twitter.

Anyways, on with the show!

If brands/retailers can decide where to place Pokemon this could be great. Like placing them on a sale item or a hot item.

Social media these days, its always seems like we are being duped as businesses. Even the future of social media can be murky at times. Facebook is the worst offender. Facebook was great for businesses in the beginning, but, since they are so big do not care. Make no mistake, they are there to make money. Again, the government fails. It has made Android weak and compromised the encryption all for law enforcement. It's just another example of the government failing to recognize its shortcomings. We also have a potential president not being prosecuted for carelessness. I do not care how high up you are, if you mess with national security, then you should be fined. Instead, she is just told how careless she was. We all knew that. We want justice. I, like many others, have lost all faith in the government. I do not think they know how to govern. Maybe we should give them a dummies guide to governing. At least the FTC is doing something useful. They are investigating Ashley Madison. I do think that site should be investigated. Not for what they do, but, for the practice. Pretending to have women on that site is deceptive.

Overwatch is a huge success for Blizzard. It beat out League of Legends. Blizzard announced its competitive mode. Most gamers were waiting for this since launch. It's happened again. Another company hacked. A hack or hacking is a  factor in business. No business is immune to it. However, Acer was the worst. A tech company not aware their system was compromised is pretty bad. A whole year! The hackers also got a lot of data too. Businesses have a duty to protect customer data. If they want to be in business. Businesses need to take these acts seriously and beef up their security. Another shameful act is from the government. They always want to spy on us more. They claim its for our safety, but, they have never made us safe. In fact, they were powerless to stop someone from killing 49 Americans. The government is never going to stop either. E3 is always a hype train running on extreme hype. E3 2016 is no exception. There were many memorable moments, as well as, forgettable ones. Publishers and developers spend countless hours creating the best demos and trailers for gamers to consume. Some are great, others, need some work. Publishers spend large sums of money to make their shows extravagant, or overdone is a better word. The shows become their own concerts and, at times, lose their focus. When E3 should be about the games, Publishers find new gimmicks to throw at gamers. The good things are, even with all the bright lights and marketing speak, some gems stand out above the crowd. It's still a great time to be gaming. This is shaping up to be the best year in gaming. We are seeing more diversity in the genres, especially first person shooters. Do you ever feel like marketing is becoming a daily event of catching up with new features, rules or programs coming out? I know I sometimes feel like that. The good news is, there are places like this to help. I also found businesses like Buffer and Hootsuite to be great resources too! It's great to see Youtube creating apps for small businesses. This allows them to create their own videos or ask for help. Sometimes, SMBs do not have the time or energy to put in videos. Tech buyouts, they happen. Tech companies see they cannot compete with the big guys, or are offered a great package. Either way, the user is forced to with find another app. LinkedIn was acquired yesterday, and it seems like a good/puzzling move. LinkedIn is a social network refusing to die and Microsoft is taking advantage. This is a great acquisition for Microsoft. It will push them into the business sector even more. I do hope they help LinkedIn's website. That site needs some love. It looks like, but, there are some things that need a change. Twitter has an odd update. They are letting users retweet themselves. I have never been of fan of this. Facebook has allowed users to do this for a while. It's a terrible idea. Twitter, do use all a favor and stop. the. madness!

In other news, the FCC won their court case! This is great news for net neutrality. The FCC can regulate internet service providers and hopefully, make them upgrade their network. E3 is right around the corner and that means games are going to announce for the first time to the public. This is usually the preemptive strike for holiday games. We all know that Call of Duty is going to be released in November, that is always a given. However, there are plenty of games we do not know about yet. This is an exciting E3 because Bethesda is doing another show. They did say last year that it would be on a year-to-year basis, but they seem to have enough games to make another show. I'm interested in seeing what they are cooking up. They usually make great games. The next thing I want to see is what Ubisoft is going to do with The Division, Ghost Recon, Watch_Dogs and Rainbow Six. Some were better received than others and I would like to The Division be a better game. I'm hoping CD Projekt has some announcements for everyone too. Other than that, August cannot come soon enough! Now the show begins!

Social media designs are always changing. Pinterest, Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook all go through it; some are better received than others. However, it is a fact of technology. Another fact is how much traffic each site brings. Some are better than others and some drive awareness better than others. Ads are another industry that is going to change. Many people do not like ads. Digital ads have been terrible for years and now companies are starting to take notice. Ad blockers and some browsers are going after these bad practices and it's going to hurt companies. The problem is, it's our fault. We let this happen and now we pay the price for it. People can only take some much before they start taking action. It's always better to make great ads and take your time with them. Throwing ads out there is not going to cut it anymore. We have to make the best ads possible if we want people to buy our products. Final thought, there are many tools out there pick the right tool that you are comfortable with. Tools are meant to be used.

New things are coming. In the age of technology we all want shiny new things. Twitter redesigned its Android app and it is great. Twitter finally realized it was better to use the strengths of Android. I do like the new design. Switching accounts is a lot easier. It's better in general. Even though Twitter is not as popular as it once was, it is still a better platform. The problem is, it still has not reached it's full potential. Snapchat came out with a new Discovery Tab and it looks interesting. It gives more information on what people may be clicking on. It also allows users to follow the publishers. Them there's Swarm. Swarm is interesting. It was once Foursquare, but Foursquare didn't want Swarm, so, they split it up. That didn't go over well and we have slowly seen Swarm become the old Foursquare again. I'm not sure if the strategy to split up Foursquare was a good one. It's proving to be a mistake. Anyways, on with the show!

History is not our strong suit. That seems to be the reason why Battlefield 1 was considered to be risky. EA thought that younger people did not know we even had a World War 1. Yes, the reason for the war is complex and many complicated reasons for why this war happened. I am glad that DICE convinced EA to make this game. It looks great and may be one of the best games of 2016. I don't know for sure, but, it could be. Another weird announcement was for Sims 4. Maxis released a statement talking about inclusiveness and all the SJW rhetoric. They did not need to do a full-on media blitz for this, but, the news reported it anyways. That does include me. This may not be a popular opinion, but, if you hate there are only two sexes, then blame nature. This whole, you can be anything you want has gotten out of control and transgender is not a gender. It's a long time coming and should help brands understand how their content is doing. The only problem is this signals the end of organic reach for Instagram. We are going to see a shift to Facebook telling you what you want to see. This is mostly because they want businesses to pay. It has worked very well for Facebook, so why not do the same to Instagram. The problem they could run into is the community. Most people went to Instagram because what Facebook was doing. Now, they will have to deal with it, or move on. We are also in an interesting time for businesses doing business on the internet. Facebook wants websites to be dead. They want everything to be through Facebook. The problem is businesses have no say on the changes to Facebook. They have to deal with it. Business websites are going nowhere and Facebook needs to get that.

Marketing News Discussed:

  • Instagram launches their new business pages and analytics
  • Why I don't think press release should be blog posts
  • Google has a roadmap for AMP
  • Facebook has some insight on the Olympics
  • Periscope adds moderation tools

Today's Episode

Social media companies have a problem. They were once the champion of free speech and no they only give it lip service. I am fine if they do not adhere to the strict code of free speech, but, claiming you are for it and then not backing it up is wrong. The problem with social media is that no one forgets what you said. Even the companies that run it are tied to this. These tech companies need to stop saying they are for free speech and then police it somewhere else. The bad side of free speech is people are allowed to say things others do not like. The alternative is to police what we say, but, that will not make the unsavory nature of human nature go away. People will be less aware of it, until, something bad happens. This is, for the most part, how ISIS got started. Another odd thing in tech is Atari getting into the Internet of Things industry. It's an odd move for them, but, they are not the once renowned game developer anymore. They have been looking for a way to stay relevant. This may be their way in, but, it's still an odd move. Scroll down to hear my show.

Tech News Discussed:

  • Airbnb adds a way for neighbors to complain
  • Facebook, Google, Twitter and others want to police free speech to protect... in Europe
  • Iran demands messaging apps that Iranian use to house their data in Country to spy on them
  • Most people use apps less than 11 times
  • Project Soli 2.0 is the future of wearables
  • Atari is getting into the Internet of Things business because it can
  • Microsoft users are turning off critical updates because of Windows 10.

Today's Episode

The month of May has seen a few games released. We had Doom, Battleborn, Overwatch, Total War, and Homefront. Then announced this month we had the new Witcher DLC and Hitman episode 3. That's six high-profile games released this month. It almost feels like November, but it's not! I played a lot of Overwatch this week and it's a great game. It's very surprising because Blizzard is not known for making fps games. Yet, it seems they can make any type of game and make it work. The sad news here is No Man's Sky may be delayed. This is an interesting game. The game is all about exploration and has little to no story. I hope it's not, but, it could be. There is no official statement from the publisher or developer yet. Listen below for more gaming news.

Gaming News You Need To Know:

  • No Man's Sky may be delayed

Today's Episode

These days games seem to be getting more expensive. Not only do gamers need to by the base game, but there are season passes. The problem is developers and publishers seem to make less content for the game released and wait for the DLC to "add value" to the game. That's not how this is suppose to work. Developers should be making their base game as feature rich as possible. Then, add more content in the future. However, that's not how this is working. They seem to withhold content for the sake of more money. If gamers want the complete experience, they have to buy two games. That sounds absurd, but, its our fault. If the consumer did not rush to buy all those COD DLCs when it began, we would not have this problem. This is our fault in a way, but, some developers get it. Unfortunately, not many do. Next time, maybe we should not buy DLC. There's still more to see below here!

Gaming Topics Discussed:

  • Witcher 3 Blood and Wine has a new trailer!
  • Hard Reset Redux released system requirements
  • Paragon has a free weekend
  • I talk about what's the best hard drive to buy
  • Fractured Space goes Free-to-play
  • Homefront has a message for you
  • Dates on when players can play Overwatch
  • Batman Arkham Series gets a redux
  • Battleborn gets a new character
  • My review of Doom
  • and more!

Upcoming Games:

  • Overwatch (May 24th)
  • Tota War: Warhammer (May 24th)
  • The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine (May 31st)

Google io is here! The best part of it was the announcement of Firebase 2.0. It is shaping up to be a great tool. There are a few great tidbits. One, there is an analytics tool optimized for mobile. Two, it can be used for iOS and Android and it's free! The demo's today show how powerful it can be. Dynamic links will help developers get people to download their apps with fewer clicks. They can also track who's clicking on them too. Messaging users are simple as well. Firebase allows developers to target their customers and hopefully convert mover with some timely messages. Firebase should help developers and marketers find better ways of getting those eyeballs. Let's see if Android developers respond. On another note, I do like the change Pinterest has made to measuring the reach of pins. Instead of only counting what has been liked, repinned or saved from the source. It also counts other's that have done the same through other accounts. Things are looking interesting in 2016. Now, on with the show!

Marketing News Discussed:

  • A study on what people post on Facebook in the summer
  • Facebook is testing out video comments
  • Pinterest changes the metric for likes, repins and saves
  • A new study finds that brands, publishers and celebrities love links in their tweets
  • Twitter might remove links and pictures from their character limits
  • Twitter is going to embed ads

Open source, it is what drives tech. However, some companies would rather say they "champion," open source only with their words. Oracle is one of those companies. I have never been fond of them, but, their litigation-happy company needs to readdress what it means to be a champion. Their fight with Google is purely for financial gain. I'm all for projecting your properties, but, when you buy a company that made a program/language open to all you're fighting the wrong battle. Oracle knew how valuable Java is to the tech industries and is trying to capitalize on it. Android is one of the most popular mobile OS out there. If Oracle can get a fraction of the money they think they are owed, they will. This is not to save a company, this is them thinking they are owed something. This not the first time Oracle has done something like this, and it will not be the last. However, I hope they lose. Now onto the rest of the show!

Tech News Discussed:

  • Oracle wants the Android pie

The march to E3 continues! We are less than a month away from E3 2016. However, many game developers have decided to announce their games prior to the big event. Civilization 6 was announced this week and it looks to be another great game. The way they are tackling cities and AI leaders should make the game better than the last one. Western Digital is going to buy SanDisk. That should make SSD's cheaper and, hopefully, better. Doom is coming out tomorrow and I am reviewing it. Let's see if it can capture the best parts of the old game. There is a lot riding on this game. One reason is the old id team is long gone. This is a new id software. Let's see if this new team can continue leaving a legacy that the old id team has left. There's more witty banter and raging going on in this podcast. Listen below!

Chatbots, they are going to take over social media. They are the new customer service automation. Instead of calling a machine, the customer, is going to chat with a machine. It's the natural evolution of automation. Where be canned response should be organic language. They are not yet, but, they will get there eventually. Businesses are scrambling to make the next great hit on social media. Customers and users should except to see more of these. Some will be great, others, not so much. Facebook and Instagram now hearts ads. They have announced plans to use more retargeting ads. This may seem like a win for marketers, but, more people are turning towards adblockers. It is no surprise people are doing this either. We are bombarded by ads. It gets to be too much and people are turning to programs to turn them off. Most ads are not good. Most are annoying and most people would rather skip them. However, this is how a business survives. The problem is, advertising has not changed very much. As technology has advanced, the way we advertise has remained the same. Snapchat is the only social network I know of that is doing something different. Now it's to see what other topics I will discuss today.

Marketings News I Discuss:

  • Periscope new updates and why you should be on it
  • Yoast SEO has a vulnerability and you need to update now
  • Adobe ups it's Martech game
  • Instagram is going to be doing retargeting ads

There always seems to be a lot going on in tech these days. Microsoft is going to stop bugging you to update to Windows 10. The biggest drama is Facebook silencing conservative views. Facebook has denied these charges, but, I would not be surprised if it was doing that. Tech companies are at an impasse right now. They all seem poised to be more liberal. For better or worse, this can become a headache. The government is looking into why it takes so long to get updates for phones. This is a big problem for consumers since there are some vulnerabilities that can cripple phones. Rendering them useless and a security threat. This is interesting for one reason, the government has said it wants weak encryption, which means weak security. I feel like the government does not know what it wants and keeps changing it's mind just because. However, it's good that the FCC and FTC are looking into this. This is a long show, so enjoy an hours worth of funny lines and rants. Enjoy!

Tech News I Discuss:

  • Dropbox goes to school
  • Samsung wants to hang ten
  • Indiegogo hearts celery
  • Microsoft will stop bugging you about upgrading... soon
  • Periscope adds search, save, and you can live stream from a drone
  • Facebook has some explaining to do with congress

We are in the month of May. That means several high profile games are coming out. It also is the month of big reveals. Activision has released a trailer for the next Call of Duty and Sega has released a trailer for Dawn of War 3. Tomorrow we will see what Battlefield 5 is all about. This is shaping up to be an interesting year for gaming. First off, there are going to be more Star Wars games; let's hope it is better than Battlefront. The Division is finally going to give better drops, that has been a problem. I am interested to see how Doom is going to be. Luckily for you, I am reviewing it once it comes out. Creating content can be tough. It is, to me, like chasing the sun. We are always trying to find/create the best content to get noticed. However, everyone is doing that. That is tons of competition and how does a small business do it well? I think it all starts with knowing your brand. This is cliche, but important. You, the owner, are the expert on the brand. You know it like no one else. Now, how can you convey that to your audience or future customers? This strategy comes in handy. I would sit down and write three characteristics of your brand. This is the best way to figure out your brand. Then, craft your personality based on that. After all, that is done, create a few samples to show to people. Find out which one best hits your audience. Create about three templates. Once you have a feel for it, figure out your hashtag. Be sure no one is using it. Then create a social media calendar. Then, test and keep on testing. Find out more below!

Marketing Discussed:

  • Vine is on Windows 10
  • Twitter brings log-out ads to the mobile web

I learned a valuable lesson this weekend, that is if you want to update your BIOS in your computer, flash it. This weekend I wanted to install a new graphics card; the problem was, the motherboard did not like it. I was not booting to Windows and there was a problem with the motherboard. I searched the web trying to find a fix and found one. I had to update the BIOS. I found the manufacturers new program and it gave me an update. I decided to update the BIOS that way. Well, that was a big mistake. Windows crashed, there was no way to repair it. I had to buy a new SSD and install Windows fresh, which that lead to more problems. There is a happy ending, I did get my new graphics card installed and everything is working fine, but, I lost all my old files. The lesson here, always flash your BIOS. Never, I mean, never do it through a program on Windows. Let's get on with the show!

Tech News I Discuss Today:

  • DISH will repair your iPhone at your house
  • Instagram adds more ads
  • Twitter wants people to be connected with the "Connect" tab
  • Giphy makes a keyboard
  • Google updates its keyboard
  • The smart plug may not be what you want

No Man's Sky looks poised to become an incredible game. The tech behind it is worth a playthrough. It is interesting that they went with no story in the game. I agree with their decision to not add a story. The whole point of No Man's Sky is to explore the universe. A story, no matter how good it would be, is going to get in the way. We will find out if having no story was a wise choice. Doom is coming out soon and adding a permadeath to the hardest level should make it brutal. The game does go back to its roots. They have eliminated regenerating health and brought back the twitch shooting. I am intrigued if this game plays well and is fun. The new episode of Hitman came out recently and it shows how great the franchise can be. This is the best I've seen of Hitman in a while. Hitman fans should be delighted. There's more I talk about in the podcast. Check it out!

Gaming Topics I Discuss:

  • Doom is so hard the developer has not beaten the hardest difficulty
  • The Division needs a network rewrite says one professional
  • It looks like Steam sales are down from last year, but more games are coming out
  • No Man's Sky does not have a story, but lore

Today's Episode

There's a new trend going on in tech. It has only recently started in the last 2 years. The need to police speech. Social Autopsy is one of those bad platforms. They claim it's to keep people "safe," and making sure people are held accountable for their actions. Except, you can report people anonymously... For business, having your employees on this can be bad. It can hurt your business and maybe keep some bad press. The only solution is to encourage people to have dummy accounts to share their real thoughts without a threat of losing their jobs. In America, we have the first amendment, but we also have people wanting to curb speech. Anything that can be deemed, "hateful," is silenced. The problem is modern society is so thinned skin. We crave controversy too. It speaks to our lives. We are bored, we hate our lives and try to fill it with the next "outrage." Unfortunately, businesses can be caught in the middle. Advertising for a popular show that an actor or reality star says something unpopular. Your business could get the public's ire. On the bright side, there's more Marketing Blend. Find out more below!

Marketing News I Discuss:

  • Google Analytics mobile redesign

Cheating, exploits, hacking, they're all a part of gaming. The Division has been in the news lately about different exploits. You can do a quick Google search of any game and find companies offering cheats. It's fine if it's a single player game, but a multiplayer game can be frustrating. Playing someone that can see through walls or do headshots all the time makes any gamer rage. The problem can be a bad anti-cheating system or a lack of admins. I have never been a fan of anti-cheating programs because they do not work. Using admins can be the best way of combating cheating and they can abuse their power too. The other problem is the gaming industry is doing a bad job of limiting exploits. Every new patch comes with a few more exploits. The cycle never ends and I feel most developers are rushing to get patches out. Maybe they do their best to have quality control. It does seem to be getting worse too. I don't know if there is an easy answer, but there needs to be better quality control. Find out more about this discussion below.

Gaming News I Discuss:

  • Mirror's Edge is delayed
  • The Division has another game breaking bug

Doing business today can be a complicated mess. That's not to say it has never been complicated. However, businesses have to be careful about what they say, do, think, feel and place. Even employees have to watch everything they do. Snapchat came under fire today for their "blackface." Now maybe, it was not the best idea, but if it was in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, then, who is to blame? This is the problem businesses face. As a marketing professional ideas are going to have to be thought about. You are going to have to tear them apart and reassemble them. Find out if there is an "outrage" in your idea. I will say, that you cannot make everyone happy. That does not mean you should not just throw up your hands and do whatever ideas comes from your head.  However, businesses should take risks, but, they should be calculated. Be sure you are equipped to handle the outrage. If you need to, update your crisis communication plan. As the boy scouts always say, "be prepared." Now, onto the show!

It's already been an interesting week in tech. We have LinkedIn's new app, EFF going after the government, EU fighting with Google and its only Tuesday! I think it's great to see LinkedIn courting young adults. They really need to figure out a way to convert them over. I know when I was in college, LinkedIn was not a priority. Facebook (because it was still cool) was the priority. Evert college student was on it. Today there are even more choices than I had. I do think LinkedIn can find other ways of courting the younger generation, but this is a good first step. I really hope they push into video and live streaming. I believe they need to find a way to do this if they still want to be relevant. I have said it before, buying Blab is not a bad route to take. Blab has a nice community and it's geared towards being more professional than the rest. Find out what other tech news I talk about below!

Games and gender, it's a tricky subject. Everyone wants to feel like their character is an extension of themselves, but, that means developers have to spend time and resources to make that happen. For big developers, that's not a problem. For indie developers, that's time and money being used that could be used for other things. The simple answer is, you are not going to make everyone happy. Rust came under fire for deciding your gender for you. This is an interesting move. I would not have expected a developer to do this. It's bold, against the norm and people hate it. It's 2016 people! We hate everything. We get offended about the smallest offenses. It will be interesting to see what happens and if other developers will try this. I was a little upset, then, thought about it, and do not care.

There's that issue and then there's BattleBorn. It's a great game. I am enjoying it. The gameplay is fast, and for the most part, balanced. Listen to my podcast to hear more about BattleBorn.

Welcome to another change is social media. Yes, live streaming is going to be the new "darling" of social media. 2016 is the year that we see brands divert more resources into live streaming. This means most brands cannot sit on the sidelines and watch anymore. You are going to have to choose the platform. There are a select few out there. The live streaming platforms are Periscope, Facebook live, Blab, and Google Hangouts on Air. They are mostly different from each other. Facebook is trying to own everything on the web and they are dong a good job of showing why. Facebook's dominance will be around for years. 2016 is shaping up to be an interesting year for marketing and social media.

Marketing and Social news discussed:

  • Snapchat adds emojis to faces
  • Google updates GA with better Adwords integration
  • GA has a new report called User Explorer
  • XHamster and why taking a stand could hurt your revenue

Today we get to hear all about how Facebook is going to take over the world! Or, the internet is probably where this is going. Facebook's Conference or the F8 conference is back, and it has nothing to do with Facebook. What? Yes, Facebook talked about VR/AR, Messenger, photo tools, a "save" button, but, there was not mention of cool features for Facebook. Facebook has slightly abandoned its first love... being a place for friends. Messenger is now the Facebook of 2004. It's the cool thing to do. Oh, we all get bots. Yes, bots are the new thing in social media. Instead of talking to a real person, we will enjoy talking to a robot. There's a bright future in anti-social, social media. Facebook, you were once a great social network, now, I think you're just a digital wasteland or a hub. Time will only tell which one is true.

Facebook's Confere and other topics I talk about:

  • Facebook has a 360 camera if you 30k
  • Facebook adds a "save" button to the web
  • Facebook has a live hub, but normal people cannot go live
  • Facebook adds bots to it's Messenger
  • Facebook will add sponsored messages to Messenger
  • Facebook wants you to upgrade your profile pic with their apps
  • Instant Articles is open to all publishers
  • Google ramps up security for those "social engineering" websites
  • Twitter adds playlist to moments
  • Smart homes have terrible security

Gaming news aside, the Doom closed beta was last weekend and I had fun trying it out. It was great to get back to the old arena shooter feeling. It has been sorely missed. There is some aspect of the game id needs to fix, but I do not think it is game breaking. The Division is another story. The developers need a better fix for the game than what they have been purposing. The main problem is the fact that they keep calling it an RPG. It has some RPG elements, but there's really only one stat that really matters, DPS. Roles do not matter in The Division. It is wasted potential. The Division is running into the same problems Destiny has faced. I do not think they will dig themselves out of it either. The PC community is harsh on boring, bland games. Battlefront is learning from this and, I think, The Division will too.

Gaming news debated:

  • Fallout 4 wins best game at BAFTA
  • Beamdog backtracks on some politically charged dialogue
  • Doom open beta lands on April 15th

Question:

What did you think about the Doom Beta?

It's time to talk about your e-newsletter. Yes, I know, you've got it under control. The thing is, you may not. I talk about what it takes to start one and maintain it. There are few key points to doing an e-newsletter. I would start with a great name. The most important part of this process is if it fits with your brand. My e-newsletter, Digital Brewer, fits well within my brand. It combines tech and coffee. It is the perfect fit. Plus, I can call all my subscribers digital brewers. I do believe starting with a great name is the best step forward. This will help create or maintain that brand personality and build a community around it. Want to know more? Listen to this episode. I also talk about other marketing news.

Time to talk about marketing news:

  • Facebook adds more features to live streamers
  • Kik invests in bots
  • Medium is in a relationship with publishers

Today's Episode

It seems like every day, we get more and more bots. Slack was one of the companies that made them popular. Now, other companies are implementing bots. Skype is doing it, and now, Kik. I think we are beginning to see the consumer side of AI take hold. I know, we have had Siri for a while, but this is a much bigger step. Siri was only on one platform. Bots are being implemented on multiple platforms. They are becoming the next "apps." Soon we will say, "there's a bot for that." It will be interesting to see what evolution comes about from these bots. I am excited to see that. I may be the only person to say that, but, it's true. Now, time for the curious case of tech news!

Discussing the curious case of tech.. or the stories I'm talking about:

  • Kik now has bots and it's serious
  • Microsoft is testing out a premium Outlook
  • Etsy launches patterns.
  • Twiter scores a big deal with the NFL
  • Twitter adds a DM button on tweets
  • Microsoft may launch surface phones in 2017
  • Facebook has a new AI to describe pictures to blind people
  • Sawyer wants you to schedule classes for your kids
  • and more!
