Digital Coffee Podcast

This podcast dedicated to all things tech. The story of how this came about was ordinary, maybe, but what I want to do with it, is extraordinary. I was working at a coffee shop and pondered my love for coffee and tech. I have also grown up around tech. I also had a new passion for coffee. This idea stayed with me until I figured out the name. Digital Coffee was born. So, with this idea I look at tech as I do coffee. How is the “tech brewed?” In my reviews, I look at it as a taste test, except I don’t drink the tech. I mean, who would? If you do, please let me know how I can! Anyways, if you feel like this is a great space to learn and have fun with tech, then, feel free to support me. I don’t mind at all! BF1 DLC is finally here for premium members and it is interesting. I am not sure about the new mode, but, the maps are pretty good. They have a good mix of open tank battles and confined spaces for infantry. I still have to play more of it to get a feel if this is a good DLC. I am not a fan of the unlock system and I wish DICE would just leave it as a different unlock system. Oh well, there's are pros and cons to everything.

Show Timeline:

  • BlizzCon is coming!
  • System Shock 3 being published by Starbreeze
  • LOL honor system being rebuilt
  • Full Throttle remaster has a date set for release

  • Well, no updates for you Windows 7/8.1

  • People on the internet are nice!

Gaming Deals:

Highlights from the Show:

I agree that Gears of War 4 did not take too many risks

Today's Episode

The AMD Ryzen chips launched this week to some interesting benchmarks. The funny thing is the benchmarks are not bad for gaming, they are not better than Intel. Every benchmark I have read has the frame rates above 60 frames per second. It's weird seeing people flip out over nothing. They are not the best benchmarks, but, they are better than the previous CPUs.

The most exciting thing is Middle Earth is getting a sequel. Yes, more information was released on the sequel. Let's hope they do not mess it up! Find out more gaming news down below.

Show Timeline:

  • Bastion buff not so buff?
  • New Overwatch Character
  • Riot won its legal battle.
  •  AMD Ryzen thoughts
  • Steel Division is an RTS we may all love!
  • Battlefield 1 voice actors to something weird

Highlights from the Show:

This overblown Ryzen is not good, is stupid.

I really hope they are allowed to still make the Indiana Jones remake

Today's Episode

BF1 or Battlefield 1 got its winter update. It was a great update. I personally do not care about ribbons. I think they are useless and people will get plenty of these ribbons. I never cared for them in BF3 and BF4. It's a personal opinion. I do think DICE needs to look at some other things they missed, but, they are doing a good job balancing for the most part. We will see what happens when the new DLC comes out.

Twitch released some stats about their site and streamers. Unsurprising, Finland is the friendliest place to game. Find out on this episode.

Show Timeline:

  • Talking about Twitch stats
  • AMD Ryzen stats
  • CDPR is doing well
  • BF1 winter update
  • For Honor Single Player review

Gaming Deals:

Highlights from the Show:

The best place to game is Finland. They are really nice according to Twitch

For Honor Single-Player is eh. Not good or bad, just bland.

I'm really excited to see what AMD Ryzen can do.

Today's Episode

Activision lays off some staff from its developers. This is because of Call of Duty and missing Q4 projections. It's sad and unfortunate to hear people losing their jobs. However, Call of Duty is in a rut. It has had some upgrades to the game, but, releasing games every year makes it boring. We shall see if Call of Duty in 2017 will be different and better. I do hope it does. Even though I do not prefer playing the game, I still like seeing competition from these developers.

I've been playing For Honor open beta a little. It's interesting. This could be a surprise hit for Ubisoft if they can keep it competitive and have an equal distribution between the factions. That was the problem with Planetside 2. In the beginning, one faction dominated. We shall see.

Show Timeline:

  • Valve is changing Greenlight
  • Stark Trek: Bridge Commander coming in May
  • Valve is working on some VR games
  • Conan Exile sells over 300,000 games and mod tools coming
  • Destiny 2 is coming out this year
  • Call of Duty is "going back to its roots"
  • Activision layoffs of some staff
  • Ghost Recon Wildlands going to have eye tracking technology
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda will have sidequest like The Witcher 3
  • New dialogue system in Mass Effect will let you "be yourself"
  • Overwatch rebalances Roadhog and Winston in PTR
  • Rainbow Six Siege Starter Edition is back and here to stay
  • E3 is opening to the public this year
  • My initial impressions of For Honor
  • My impressions of Ghost Recon Wildlands

Gaming Deals:

Highlights from the Show:

Ghost Recon was a mediocre open world game

If For Honor can keep a balanced ratio in the factions,  it might be a hit.

It's good that Mass Effect will have better sidequests.

Resident Evil 7, what can you say about it? It was very different from Resident Evil 6. I played and finished the game this week. It scared the hell out of me. I was very gruesome too. If you cannot stand lots of gore, this is not the game for you. It is great to see the survivor horror back in Resident Evil. I talk about why I rather play games than watch movies. DICE had some teases for gamers with the BF1 DLC. It was a quick preview of a new tank and maybe a new elite class. I have and I am still enjoying BF1, I wondering what new items this DLC brings.  What is known about the DLC is the French are coming. Probably weapons based on the French army and that's all everyone knows outside of EA and DICE. Halo Wars 2 beta finally reached the PC today. There is only one mode and it's interesting. Happy Holidays everyone! It's a great time of year. However, timed exclusives are the worst! They the scrooge of the gaming industry. I think it's dumb and publishers need to stop doing them. Just launch everything at the same time. I do not like this update is only going to be on platform A for X number of days. It does seem publishers are saying to not buy it on the platform you prefer. I say, "no more!" Anyways, I do like the festive updates that are coming to Hitman, Overwatch and others. Keep it coming!

The Game Awards was on Thursday. I did not see it because I was busy. I do think most people do not watch this because of many reasons. They seem to be like all the other awards shows out there. I rarely watch any of them. Why? I really don't care about the awards. It's nice when a game you like get recognition, but, gamer's play games. We care about reviews. That's really about it. Ubisoft can we talk? Ubisoft hates stories? Apparently, they do not want to write narratives anymore. I cannot remember the last game I played where the story was good. Ubisoft hates stories. They do not want to create interesting characters. The problem with gaming stories is they all seem to follow a pattern. Yes, I know there are only some many ways to write a story. However, the gaming industry is not willing to risk that much. The problem is the best stories can come from those risks. I hope they find a way to do both.

I talk about more in the podcast, find out what?

Yes, I finally played enough of Battlefield 1. In this episode, I give my Battlefield 1 review. If you want a first-person shooter that is not set in the modern or future setting this could be a game for you. Yes, I'm still playing this and Titanfall 2 and Civilization 6. I will have those reviews later. Also, BlizzCon has begun. Yes, this year we have a new character for Overwatch. This could be a great addition or break the game. I know Blizzard does a pretty good job of balance, but, I know infiltrator classes can break games. I've seen it happen. We will see if this is a good addition or a game breaking addition. Either way, it's going to be interesting.

The numbers for Titanfall 2 appear to not be good. The analysts are saying that it will not sell well. Titanfall 2 will sell. They are not denying that they are concerned about why they released so close to Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty. This could impact the next game. I mean, there might not be one. AAA games needs to sell a certain amount of copies sold to make it worth for another game.  However, Battlefield 1 sold more than projected. Everyone is enjoying a WW1 game. Who knew we wanted to play a game about WW1. Even though there is a funny glitch, people seem to enjoy the game.

RockStar finally announced Red Dead Redemption 2. The first game was a great ride. It was one of the best western games out there. However, they need to bring this game to the PC. The first one never made it to the PC. It was a sad and a missed opportunity. I'm hoping they will bring this game to the PC at a later date. If they do not, then, that's just a dumb strategy. Plus, BF1 and Civ 6 are out now.

Gamers are an interesting breed. We crave excitement and a challenge, but, not all the time. It gets worse as time goes on. The older we get, the more we do not want to compete. Games are fun and sometimes you just want to have fun. Not compete, not have to deal with people. That's why single player is still a viable avenue for developers to do. It's a big surprise that the older you get, the less you want to compete. People change, you have more responsibilities and competing is not fun. It's great that single player games are still around. There will always be a market for it.

Battlefield is back, or, in beta form. It's great to see this series go back in history. World War 1 is rarely talked about. Most people do not even know who was involved and why the world was at war. There's only one other game that has touched this era and that was Verdun. It is a great game. Unfortunately, Battlefield will overshadow it. It some ways, that's sad.  The great news, is we get to experience in  some ways how the battle was fought. The latest blunder in a long line of blunders in the gaming industry is Metal Gear. What the heck? I do not understand why they made it a co-op zombie game. This just sounds slapped on. There’s been an explosion of news coming from QuakeCon. Today, they revealed Prey and Quake Champions gameplay trailers. They got me excited for these games. Quake is bringing back the old school shooter vibe. This is lacking in many first-person shooter games. The reason, Call of Duty influence. This game has enhanced or infected first-person shooter games for years. Many developers tried to replicate their success. This usually led to clones that were not good. It’s great to see these old games coming back. It reminds all the old gamers about the heyday. It also makes you aware how old you are. It’s a great time to be a gamer!

Valve is in a terrible situation. CS:GO is a great game and has made Valve lots of money. However, this betting scandal is not good. It has hurt Valve's reputation and gained them a lawsuit. The problem is Youtuber's. The fact that they gamed the system and conned people out of their money is terrible. I do hope some legal action gets taken against them. However, No Man's Sky is in the news. This time, it's bad. Sean Murray took a patent and used it in the game. I'm glad the company does not want to halt the release of the game. The problem is, patents are so hard to track, you may never know you are infringing on one.

Nintendo is doing things right. First, it's popular Pokemon Go and now, Nintendo Mini. Yes, I want to play some classic games. This is great news. Even though we have to wait until November, this Christmas season is going to be awesome! Overwatch announced several changes. Two seems to be pretty good moves. Zenyatta needed a buff. He was easy to kill and this will help make him effective. D. VA is getting a buff too. This should help make her more of a tank. Before, it was easy to deal with her. Overwatch is a huge success for Blizzard. It beat out League of Legends. Blizzard announced its competitive mode. Most gamers were waiting for this since launch. It's a competitive game, so it is a perfect match. It will be interesting to see if the community likes this version of the mode. I suspect Overwatch will be popular for years if Blizzard maintains this game. That means, new maps, characters and modes. If they can keep that up, this game will be played for years. Blizzard did a great job, now they have to keep tweaking to make it even better.

E3 is always a hype train running on extreme hype. E3 2016 is no exception. There were many memorable moments, as well as, forgettable ones. Publishers and developers spend countless hours creating the best demos and trailers for gamers to consume. Some are great, others, need some work. Publishers spend large sums of money to make their shows extravagant, or overdone is a better word. The shows become their own concerts and, at times, lose their focus. When E3 should be about the games, Publishers find new gimmicks to throw at gamers. The good things are, even with all the bright lights and marketing speak, some gems stand out above the crowd. It's still a great time to be gaming. This is shaping up to be the best year in gaming. We are seeing more diversity in the genres, especially first person shooters. New techniques and new technology coming out.

Now, time to listen in on Gamer's Cafe.

Today's Episode

E3 is right around the corner and that means games are going to announce for the first time to the public. This is usually the preemptive strike for holiday games. We all know that Call of Duty is going to be released in November, that is always a given. However, there are plenty of games we do not know about yet. This is an exciting E3 because Bethesda is doing another show. They did say last year that it would be on a year-to-year basis, but they seem to have enough games to make another show. I'm interested in seeing what they are cooking up. They usually make great games. The next thing I want to see is what Ubisoft is going to do with The Division, Ghost Recon, Watch_Dogs and Rainbow Six. Some were better received than others and I would like to The Division be a better game. I'm hoping CD Projekt has some announcements for everyone too. Other than that, August cannot come soon enough! Now the show begins!

Today's Episode

History is not our strong suit. That seems to be the reason why Battlefield 1 was considered to be risky. EA thought that younger people did not know we even had a World War 1. Yes, the reason for the war is complex and many complicated reasons for why this war happened. I am glad that DICE convinced EA to make this game. It looks great and may be one of the best games of 2016. I don't know for sure, but, it could be. Another weird announcement was for Sims 4. Maxis released a statement talking about inclusiveness and all the SJW rhetoric. They did not need to do a full-on media blitz for this, but, the news reported it anyways. That does include me. This may not be a popular opinion, but, if you hate there are only two sexes, then blame nature. This whole, you can be anything you want has gotten out of control and transgender is not a gender. I'm sorry, but, that is completely made up.

Gaming News Debated:

  • Some Overwatch characters may get a nerf (not bastion)
  • Overwatch has 7 million players
  • It's hard to cheat on Overwatch.. according to hackers
  • Rainbow Six Siege gets a starter pack
  • Lawbreakers closed alpha coming later this month
  • Sims 4 does away with  gender because it hates science
  • Valve has sold 500 million controllers
  • Patriot releasing new SSD drives
  • Battlefield 1 was almost not made because we don't know history
  • and more!

Today's Episode

The month of May has seen a few games released. We had Doom, Battleborn, Overwatch, Total War, and Homefront. Then announced this month we had the new Witcher DLC and Hitman episode 3. That's six high-profile games released this month. It almost feels like November, but it's not! I played a lot of Overwatch this week and it's a great game. It's very surprising because Blizzard is not known for making fps games. Yet, it seems they can make any type of game and make it work. The sad news here is No Man's Sky may be delayed. This is an interesting game. The game is all about exploration and has little to no story. I hope it's not, but, it could be. There is no official statement from the publisher or developer yet. Listen below for more gaming news.

Gaming News You Need To Know:

  • No Man's Sky may be delayed

  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance is delayed until 2017

Today's Episode

These days games seem to be getting more expensive. Not only do gamers need to by the base game, but there are season passes. The problem is developers and publishers seem to make less content for the game released and wait for the DLC to "add value" to the game. That's not how this is suppose to work. Developers should be making their base game as feature rich as possible. Then, add more content in the future. However, that's not how this is working. They seem to withhold content for the sake of more money. If gamers want the complete experience, they have to buy two games. That sounds absurd, but, its our fault. If the consumer did not rush to buy all those COD DLCs when it began, we would not have this problem. This is our fault in a way, but, some developers get it. Unfortunately, not many do. Next time, maybe we should not buy DLC. There's still more to see below here!

Gaming Topics Discussed:

  • Witcher 3 Blood and Wine has a new trailer!
  • Hard Reset Redux released system requirements
  • Paragon has a free weekend
  • I talk about what's the best hard drive to buy
  • Fractured Space goes Free-to-play
  • Homefront has a message for you
  • Dates on when players can play Overwatch
  • Batman Arkham Series gets a redux
  • Battleborn gets a new character
  • My review of Doom
  • and more!

Upcoming Games:

  • Overwatch (May 24th)
  • Tota War: Warhammer (May 24th)
  • The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine (May 31st)

Game Deals:

  • Up to 85% off on The Witcher series (GOG)
  • Darker Dungeon 33% off (Steam)
  • Galactic Civilization 3 66% off (Steam)
  • WarGame Franchise 77% off (Steam)

Are you excited for the new Witcher 3 DLC? What do you think of Doom?

Today's Episode

The march to E3 continues! We are less than a month away from E3 2016. However, many game developers have decided to announce their games prior to the big event. Civilization 6 was announced this week and it looks to be another great game. The way they are tackling cities and AI leaders should make the game better than the last one. Western Digital is going to buy SanDisk. That should make SSD's cheaper and, hopefully, better. Doom is coming out tomorrow and I am reviewing it. Let's see if it can capture the best parts of the old game. There is a lot riding on this game. One reason is the old id team is long gone. This is a new id software. Let's see if this new team can continue leaving a legacy that the old id team has left. There's more witty banter and raging going on in this podcast. Listen below!

Gaming News Discussed:

  • Titanfall 2 comes out Q3 of 2016
  • EA says they will make Star Wars games every year
  • Outer Rim DLC For Battlefront free this weekend
  • Battlefield 1 will be digital only in North America
  • Windows 10 UWP gets updated
  • GDDR5X ahead of schedule

Today's Episode

We are in the month of May. That means several high profile games are coming out. It also is the month of big reveals. Activision has released a trailer for the next Call of Duty and Sega has released a trailer for Dawn of War 3. Tomorrow we will see what Battlefield 5 is all about. This is shaping up to be an interesting year for gaming. First off, there are going to be more Star Wars games; let's hope it is better than Battlefront. The Division is finally going to give better drops, that has been a problem. I am interested to see how Doom is going to be. Luckily for you, I am reviewing it once it comes out. It is interesting to see if the free-to-play model will be around. There have been some games ditching that model for the standard one. Now if only we could get rid of Call of Duty for a year, that would be an even better year! Read further and listen to the full episode below.

Today's Episode

No Man's Sky looks poised to become an incredible game. The tech behind it is worth a playthrough. It is interesting that they went with no story in the game. I agree with their decision to not add a story. The whole point of No Man's Sky is to explore the universe. A story, no matter how good it would be, is going to get in the way. We will find out if having no story was a wise choice. Doom is coming out soon and adding a permadeath to the hardest level should make it brutal. The game does go back to its roots. They have eliminated regenerating health and brought back the twitch shooting. I am intrigued if this game plays well and is fun. The new episode of Hitman came out recently and it shows how great the franchise can be. This is the best I've seen of Hitman in a while. Hitman fans should be delighted. There's more I talk about in the podcast. Check it out!

Gaming Topics I Discuss:

  • Doom is so hard the developer has not beaten the hardest difficulty
  • The Division needs a network rewrite says one professional
  • It looks like Steam sales are down from last year, but more games are coming out
  • No Man's Sky does not have a story, but lore
  • Call of Duty is going to remaster COD 4
  • Deus Ex is getting new and better augs
  • Games you should get
  • Hitman Episode 2 review

Today's Episode

Cheating, exploits, hacking, they're all a part of gaming. The Division has been in the news lately about different exploits. You can do a quick Google search of any game and find companies offering cheats. It's fine if it's a single player game, but a multiplayer game can be frustrating. Playing someone that can see through walls or do headshots all the time makes any gamer rage. The problem can be a bad anti-cheating system or a lack of admins. I have never been a fan of anti-cheating programs because they do not work. Using admins can be the best way of combating cheating and they can abuse their power too. The other problem is the gaming industry is doing a bad job of limiting exploits. Every new patch comes with a few more exploits. The cycle never ends and I feel most developers are rushing to get patches out. Maybe they do their best to have quality control. It does seem to be getting worse too. I don't know if there is an easy answer, but there needs to be better quality control. Find out more about this discussion below.

Gaming News I Discuss:

  • Mirror's Edge is delayed
  • The Division has another game breaking bug
  • Rocket League gets hoops mode next month
  • Microsoft looks beyond XBox and Windows 10
  • Bethesda gets into the card game
  • Break the Law and gravity in LawBreakers
  • and more!

Today's Episode

Games and gender, it's a tricky subject. Everyone wants to feel like their character is an extension of themselves, but, that means developers have to spend time and resources to make that happen. For big developers, that's not a problem. For indie developers, that's time and money being used that could be used for other things. The simple answer is, you are not going to make everyone happy. Rust came under fire for deciding your gender for you. This is an interesting move. I would not have expected a developer to do this. It's bold, against the norm and people hate it. It's 2016 people! We hate everything. We get offended about the smallest offenses. It will be interesting to see what happens and if other developers will try this. I was a little upset, then, thought about it, and do not care.

There's that issue and then there's BattleBorn. It's a great game. I am enjoying it. The gameplay is fast, and for the most part, balanced. Listen to my podcast to hear more about BattleBorn.

Gaming News I Discuss:

  • Witcher 3 gets a new picture for their final DLC
  • Rust developers explain gender in their game
  • Guild Wars 2 is getting an update
  • Doom is having an open beta and released a new video
  • City Overhaul makes Skyrim's cities feel like cities
  • Battle.net hit with a DDoS attack
  • Ubisoft fixes bug where characters are erased
  • I talk about BattleBorn Open Beta

Are you going to buy BattleBorn? What do you think of the beta?

Today's Episode

Gaming news aside, the Doom closed beta was last weekend and I had fun trying it out. It was great to get back to the old arena shooter feeling. It has been sorely missed. There is some aspect of the game id needs to fix, but I do not think it is game breaking. The Division is another story. The developers need a better fix for the game than what they have been purposing. The main problem is the fact that they keep calling it an RPG. It has some RPG elements, but there's really only one stat that really matters, DPS. Roles do not matter in The Division. It is wasted potential. The Division is running into the same problems Destiny has faced. I do not think they will dig themselves out of it either. The PC community is harsh on boring, bland games. Battlefront is learning from this and, I think, The Division will too.

Gaming news debated:

  • Fallout 4 wins best game at BAFTA
  • Beamdog backtracks on some politically charged dialogue
  • Doom open beta lands on April 15th
  • Battleborn open beta pre-loading begins
  • Fallout 4 updates survivor mode
  • I talk about the Division update

Today's Episode:

Diversity. It's all the talk in every group in America. The conversation is usually about the lack of it. Gaming is not impervious to these one-sided arguments. Rarely researched, people throw out diversity for the sake of news. The way most people talk about it is, on a superficial level. There's a mental checklist of what diversity should include. The main points are race, sex, and sexual orientation.  A diversity of thought is always left out. We are not concerned with different opinions. Different opinions are bad. Unfortunately, some developers are riding this train too. Talking about a"lack of diversity," it always revolves around race, sex, and sexual orientation. Writers should be more concerned about the depth of their characters.

Gaming News I Discuss and You Need to Know:

  • The Division is getting trading, inclusion in next update
  • The backpack bug will be patched soon in The Division
  • Doom gets a live-action trailer
  • Hitman episode 2 release next month
  • Metal Gear and Farcry are getting survivor modes

Warning: Rant Incoming!

Gamer's Cafe hates bad storytelling and demands better! When making a game, storytelling is important. I feel most games do not try or do not give enough time to develop a great story. Gaming is not the only industry with this problem, movies have a tendency to follow a checklist too. This is good at times, but for truly amazing storytelling, this is not the best way. Checklists can help drive storytelling, but, it lacks that creative element. Game developers should try to find a balance in this process. I'm not saying have no deadlines, but give enough time for developing a story. Stories are great in an abstract form, but sometimes developers lose something in the process. This is of time constraints or budget. I think it's time to look at the story again because your game suffers from terrible a story.
